Interpreting intelligent applications: Gartner top 10 strategic technology trends 2024 #7 KellyOnTech
At the end of 2023, the consulting company Gartner announced the top ten strategic technology trends for 2024. Today I will introduce the seventh major trend, which is the optimization of decision-making processes through intelligent applications. In 2024, artificial intelligence will become a fundamental capability for every application.
Why Will Intelligent Applications Become a Trend
Because generative AI can truly make applications smarter, thereby improving the overall experience for users, consumers, vendors, architects, and software developers. Generative AI is multi-modal. It can absorb all forms of existing application data, text, voice, video, images, etc., and link to other analytics tools to make better predictions and provide more personalized recommendations to the user. This truly enables decision-making based on data. I explained this rationale during the introduction of the Google Gemini model. This is why this model shocked the entire technology circle after its launch.
Another advantage is that if we don’t know programming, but we want to understand the answers to some more complex questions, then we can describe the results we want to get, and the intelligent application will automatically generate prompts and program.
According to Gartner’s prediction, in the next two years, all applications will become intelligent, and this intelligence will be multi-modal. But intelligent applications also bring some problems.
What Problems Do Intelligent Applications bring?
One of them is that the big platforms operate in silos. Microsoft, Google, for example, have their own platforms, and other companies have their own platforms, because every company wants users to use its own platform. There is a contradiction between this and the unimpeded use of information and tools needed for the entire generative artificial intelligence to fully play its role and achieve real convenience.
Another problem is that the decision-making process of artificial intelligence becomes less and less transparent. First, we can only access limited information. In addition, the tools we can use are also limited, as well as the skills each person has is limited. However, compared to humans, artificial intelligence access data that is completely out of our reach and with their ability to flexibly apply other intelligent tools. The decisions they make have already exceed the range of human understanding.
There’s also the issue that human function is use-it-or-lose-it. With the various intelligent applications of generative AI in multimodal environments to assist in decision-making, the capabilities that are important to humans, such as the ability to analyze problems and make choices, will continue to deteriorate. But the point is that decisions aided by AI are paid for by each of us, and we must live with the consequences of our choices.
